Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours.

WHAT ARE BODY-FOCUSED REPETITIVE BEHAVIORS?

Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours (BFRBs) are repetitive behaviours directed towards the body. They can include skin picking, hair pulling and nail picking, among others.

You may have heard them by other names:

Dermatillomania, Trichotillomania, Onychotillomania.

For some people, these behaviours happen almost automatically, sometimes without consciously realising they have started. For others, the behaviour may be preceded by a strong urge, a feeling that something is not quite right, or an increasing need to correct, remove, smooth, check or make something feel "right."

The behaviour can provide a temporary sense of relief, satisfaction, numbness, completion or calm.

But the relief doesn't necessarily last.

The behaviour may then be followed by frustration, regret, disappointment or a renewed determination to stop — only for the cycle to automatically begin again the moment you stop resisting it.

BFRBs are not simply a matter of lacking willpower.

The behaviour is on a looping pattern in your subconscious. It is a distraction tool your subconscious designed to help your nervous system regulate in times of stress and overwhelm.

It can show up in the most unlikely places - even when you are relaxing.

WHAT CAUSES BFRBs?

BFRBs can involve a complex subconscious interaction between thoughts, attention, sensory experiences, emotions, expectations and learned responses. Over time these responses become increasingly automatic. Fighting the urge to pick or scratch or pull, only intensifies it. The aim of this program is to shift emphasis away from fighting the urge to ……………………………

IS THIS YOU?

  • Find yourself repeatedly picking, pulling or manipulating an area of your body?

  • Sometimes begin the behaviour without consciously deciding to do it?

  • Become fixated on a particular imperfection, sensation, hair, skin area or nail?

  • Feel that something needs to be corrected, removed or made "right"?

  • Find yourself thinking about the behaviour even when you don't want to?

  • Experience a strong sense that something is unfinished or not quite right?

  • Have difficulty knowing when to stop?

  • Find yourself becoming increasingly particular, fastidious or perfectionistic?

  • Feel compelled to regain a sense of control when something doesn't feel right?

  • Promise yourself that you will stop, only to find yourself doing it again?

  • Experience frustration or disappointment with yourself afterwards?

  • Wish you could have more choice about what you do next?

If you answered yes, this program is for you.

Why Hypnotherapy for BFRB?

Stopping a unconscious repetitive behaviour rarely works when you consciously tell yourself `don’t do it’.

This may be because the behaviour is no longer driven by conscious choice.

Hypnotherapy works by shifting subconscious thought patterns that shape our responses.

Rather than concentrating on suppressing the behaviour, we work on changing the underlying subconscious drivers that activate the fixation.

Stop fighting yourself

If you have spent years telling yourself:

  • I have to stop

  • Why can’t I control this?

  • I’m not going to do this again.

  • I just need more discipline.

You already know how exhausting and futile that approach is.

The question is… are you ready for a new approach?

Because you know the answer is out there. Other individuals don’t fixate, don’t pick, don’t scratch like you do. They don’t battle themselves. They don’t pick at themselves.

What do they do differently?

Client’s Testimonies

  • `I was at a point in my life where I had lost all hope of overcoming Misophonia, as the condition had spiralled out-of-control. When I came across Andrea and had an initial conversation, I was filled with hope again - I knew I had found someone who truly understood me. After embarking on the Minimise Misophonia program I have been able to reclaim the joy in my life. Thank you, Andrea.’

    Ellie (Vic)

  • `I had 4 sessions with Andrea. This was to focus on a few things, but mostly my misophonia. I had battled misophonia for years and didn't have a day that it didn't impact me. Before hypnotherapy, the over stimulation of noise and repetitive sounds really frustrated me. After each session those triggers subsided into the background, and they are now duller and insignificant. I saw improvements after each session. The recordings of each session helped cement my improvements.'

    Jo (Vic)

  • `My experience with Andrea was excellent. From the start I felt comfortable and supported. Her approach and techniques for misophonia were highly effective and she helped me feel more relaxed and confident. I am happy to recommend Andrea to anyone wanting hypnotherapy.'

    Carlo (NSW)

  • `I had a life changing experience with Andrea. Since I was a little kid I suffered with Misophonia - clocks, chewing, everyday noises were driving me crazy. Within four sessions my mind started to switch off the triggers. I am finally at ease with everyday noise using the tools Andrea taught me. I cannot recommend her enough.

    Josh (Vic)

  • `Before my sessions with Andrea, my lifelong struggle with misophonia felt like an endless battle. I had lost count of how many apartments I’d moved out of simply because I couldn’t cope with certain sounds. The four sessions I had with Andrea were truly life‑changing, helping not only with my misophonia but also other areas of my life. Thanks to the tools and strategies I gained, I don’t listen out for sounds anymore and have a renewed sense of hope and vitality moving forward. Highly recommend Andrea.'

    Roula (Vic)

  • Andrea was incredibly helpful in reducing my Misophonia. I completed 4 sessions with her and I always felt heard and comfortable during those sessions. I noticed changes within a couple of weeks.

    Mi (Vic)

  • `After completing the hypnotherapy program, I found that my fixations on certain sounds had significantly decreased and the levels of frustration I experienced also subsided. Andrea taught me practical skills and techniques to better focus my listening and guided me to a place where I no longer let unimportant sounds affect me.'

    Jack (Vic)

  • `This treatment has been quite ground breaking. Andrea understands misphonia and has seen progress in clients just like me - this was so encouraging. I have felt silly explaining my symptoms of the last 25 years to confused psychologists - I was becoming so bitter and despondent with misphonia, but now I feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel and sweet relief. Misphonia is so triggering and hypnosis is really great at tweaking your perspective instead of trying to desensitise you through exposure treatments I've tried which just made me feel on edge. So grateful for this gentler approach and enjoying being calmer for it.'

    Lisa (Vic)

  • `Not only do I appreciate the number of tools that are now at my disposal, but also the powerful messages conveyed to me that are slowly but surely helping me shift my perception of things and my reactions to them.'

    Umamah (Qld)

  • `My treatment with Andrea has been truly life-changing. Not only has it significantly reduced the impact of misophonia on my daily life, but it has also had a positive effect on many other areas of my wellbeing, including my confidence, resilience, and overall sense of calm. I feel better equipped to handle challenges and enjoy life without constantly being triggered by sounds. I would highly recommend this course to anyone struggling with misophonia.'

    Louise (VIC)

  • `I have loved working with Andrea, she has such a safe, calming nature which made me feel completely comfortable throughout every session. I’ve come away with so many tools that I know I’ll be able to use for years to come helping to manage my misophonia. I feel so much more confident about handling triggers and can’t thank Andrea enough.'

    Kristi (VIC)

  • The whole process has helped me alter the way I perceive sounds and movements in people. I am now in control of my emotions and I recommend this to anyone suffering misophonia.
